Possibly the last guitar you’ll ever buy.  60 years of playing, performing and teaching guitar has given Denny an advantage over the majority of guitar builders today. Denny understands the demands of the professional player because he is one. He discovered there are certain key elements that make a great guitar, and with that knowledge he created the Zager ZAD50 Series.  Elements like solid wood construction, high quality hardware, a custom neck design that feels good in your hand, string spacing that allows you to move faster on the fretboard, that simultaneously prevents buzzes and rattles, combined with a special bracing system that produces one of the best sounds in the guitar industry today. Read more

In designing the ZAD50 Denny wanted to build a guitar that had the special details you see in only $2500 instruments.  Things like a Venetian cutaway box design that allow you to slide your hand down low “into” the guitar for easier playability.  Hand scalloped bracing that gives the guitar a more powerful robust sound.  Hand filed frets that allow your fingers to glide over the fretboard without chafing your fingertips.

For 2025 Denny called Bob Fishman at Fishman Electronics (considered the best guitar electronics company in the world) and ordered the Fishman Presys electronics package used in our $2100 ZAD80 Series guitars.  The electronic transducer system and automatic tuner allow you to plug into any amplifier or PA system and play it like a full blown electric.  The onboard equalization package provides infinite sound possibilities with a built in automatic tuner that tunes your guitar in a fraction of the time it takes using conventional methods.  When you’re tired of electric simply unplug and you’ll have the traditional sound of an acoustic.

Pros using the ZAD50CE on stage say it matches or betters $2000 instruments, but with easier playability and a much lower price since you’re buying direct from our workshop in Lincoln, Nebraska. Be sure to read artist comments and magazine reviews on the 50 as it consistently rates in the top 5% of acoustics made world wide. 100% money back guarantee including shipping fees both ways. It’s a lifetime instrument so it comes with a lifetime warranty.

Venetian Cutaway Style
A "Venetian Cutaway" is a guitar that has a section of the body "cut away" by the neck which makes it easier to slide your hand down low to reach chords near the sound hole. Denny braces the cutaways a little differently then his full box guitars so sound quality matches. If you’re a player that spends a lot of time on that part of the neck a cutaway box is invaluable.
guitar topmhgy
Mahogany Top
The most important part of an acoustic guitar is its top. The top acts like a speaker. When a string is plucked energy is transferred to the top and the top starts to move. Mahogany has all the characteristics of a great tonewood; its weight and strength allow for well-defined ranges of tone as well as strong volume. It's a little harder wood with better projection and real character in the grain. It works easily and displays beautiful figure, everything from straight-grained to flamed, quilt, curl, and mottled.

zager guitar
Mahogany Back-sides
One of the most popular tone woods used on acoustic guitars today. If you’re looking for punchy bass, solid mids and sparkling highs mahogany is the wood you want on your next guitar. Acoustic guitars in general tend to live in the midrange portion of the sound spectrum, and mahogany in particular displays this characteristic best. Mahogany's tendency to emphasize midrange tones gives this guitar a rich full sound no matter the playing style. You can fingerpick, strum, or flatpick and mahogany always delivers.
neck mhgy
Mahogany Neck
Mahogany—one of the most popular tone woods used on acoustic guitars for the last 50 years
travel size solid electric guitar
Mahogany Headstock
Mahogany is lightweight yet strong, and its timeless look is used on many quality guitars. The guitar head stock configuration is a registered trademark and is used under license from C.F. Martin & Co. Inc. of Nazareth, Pennsylvania, USA.
guitar brace work
Zager Design (Hand Scalloped) Bracework
The technique of scalloping or shaving the braces can have a huge impact on the power and tone of an acoustic guitar. By shaving or reducing the thickness of the brace, it becomes more flexible and therefore lets the top move more freely. When done by a Master Luthier the brace maintains its structural integrity, while making the top more efficient. The result is faster attack, longer sustain, more bass, more power, and an overall improvement in the whole tone system.
guitar rosette mhgy
Abalone Rosette
Abalone type inlay is found on only the highest quality guitars. Laid by hand one piece at a time, the color and translucence of each piece changes with different amounts of light. Not only does it add to the look of your guitar, but it also adds to the value.
fret dots
Pearl Fret-markers
Used on only the highest quality guitars in the world. Laid by hand on the fret board one piece at a time. It's a very tedious, time consuming process but the results are breathtaking.
Zipper Stripe Back-detail
Laid by hand one piece at a time. Adds to the overall beauty and sets off the color of the wood. Found on only the highest quality guitars in the world.
high gloss finish
High Gloss Finish
High-gloss finish provides excellent protection but at the same time is extremely light and elastic. This is a crucial point in both the sound of the guitar and its ability to age—which is what makes a guitar sound better year after year. A thick finish muffles a guitar's vibration and blocks aging.
guitar truss
Custom Adjustment Setting Truss-rod
Denny designs his guitars with a truss rod adjustment setting that allows you to dial in your guitar to your particular playing style. In this way if you're a heavy handed player you can set the action higher so you can "get on it" a little for more power, and if you're lighter handed touch player you can dial in the action low so you can move faster and play longer with less fatigue.
guitar transducer
Genuine Fishman Built-in-transducer
Fishman transducers are the highest quality transducers used in acoustic guitars today. A transducer is an amplification device placed under the saddle which allows you to plug into an amplifier and play an acoustic guitar like an electric guitar. This is all run by an on-board electronics package and equalizer that allows you to control the sound. A transducer properly installed by a pro luthier will bring out the bass response and rich ambiance of your guitar's wood. Done improperly your guitar will sound flat and have uneven tone quality.
Guitar Presys
Genuine Fishman Built-in-automatic-tuner
Ask any pro who makes the finest guitar electronics systems in the world and 9 out of 10 will say Fishman. An electronic tuner allows you to tune your guitar in a fraction of the time it takes using conventional tuning methods. Simply hit a string and the LCD indicator guides you into perfect pitch. A red and green light instantly lets you know when the tune is dead on. This is a very important tool for the new player who is trying to develop and train their ear for perfect pitch. It's also helps the professional player who wants to get in perfect tune fas
Guitar Presys
Genuine Fishman Built-in-equalizer
Fishman equalizers are the highest quality equalizers used in acoustic guitars today. The equalizer is an electronic unit that controls the sound and volume when plugged into an amplifier or PA system. There are adjustments for highs, mids, lows, and presence. Fishman EQ's are used exclusively on high end acoustics by artists such as Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, Alan Jackson and Aerosmith to name just a few.
guitar grover gears silver
Genuine Grover (silver) Tuning-machines
Genuine Grover sealed tuning machines are found on only the finest guitars made. Look at tuners on $2500+ acoustics and you will see the majority have "Grovers." Unlike open gear tuners where the tuning mechanism is exposed, Grover sealed tuners contain a lubricant that keep the tuning mechanism sealed air-tight so the gears turn smooth and continue to for the life of your instrument. Lifetime warranty. If you have a tuner go bad we'll replace it free of charge for life.
guitar nut
Bone Hand Carved Nut
Denny hand carves his nuts from bone for each guitar so the strings are set lower with custom spacing. Lower string heights make it easier to press down to form chords and it also increases finger speed. Custom spacing allows you to move faster with less buzzes, mutes, and rattles because you’re no longer bumping adjacent strings. Custom string spacing makes it easier for all hands sizes big and small. Lifetime warranty. Break a nut and we'll replace it free of charge for life
guitar saddle
Tusq Hand Carved Saddle
Denny hand carves each saddle for each individual guitar. Denny also adjusts the intonation settings to bring the guitar harmonically in balance with itself. This not only makes your guitar easier to play, but it also makes it sound more powerful. Customers say our guitars fall into tune easier and stay in tune longer...this is one of the reasons why. Denny uses only genuine "Tusq" brand saddles on his guitars which you generally only find on higher dollar acoustics . Lifetime warranty. Break a saddle and we'll replace it free of charge for life.
zager ez play guitars
Zager Custom Lights Strings
Zager custom strings are designed by Denny exclusively for his Guitars. We have customers using all brands and gauges of strings on our guitars with excellent results (Elixir, Martin, Fender, Gibson, D'addario) but these are the strings our customers seem to like the most on our guitars. Hand wound daily in our shop in Lincoln, Nebraska.
frets
Zager Soft Touch (Hand Filed) Frets
Denny hand files each fret one at a time on every guitar that leaves our shop. By filing the frets Denny achieves two important things. When sliding up and down the neck your fingers will no longer get irritated and sore and you won't suffer from what we call "String Bite" and overall finger fatigue. Secondly, when you file the frets by hand each fret will have the same uniform height. 9 times out of 10 when you have a buzzing string it has nothing to with your playing, it’s because you have a guitar with a fret that’s sitting away from the fret board hitting a string.
life time warranty
Lifetime Warranty
Our warranty is simple. Lifetime on all guitars. A quality guitar should be made to last a lifetime and if it doesn't it wasn't a quality guitar to begin with.

How does this guitar compare with your old guitar, other guitars, or guitars you've tried in stores?
It's much easier to play and to be able to play for longer periods of time!

What's your favorite part about this guitar?
The smaller neck, the wider nut and the glorious sound when it's plugged in!

If you didn't know the price of this guitar what would you estimate the price to be?
$1000-$1200

How would you rate customer support?
The best on the planet.

Would you recommend this guitar to others…if so why?
I would definitely recommend a Zager guitar and frankly, already have several times to friends. It's a great sounding, good looking, easy to play guitar for a reasonable amount of cash. And if by rare chance there is a problem, their customer service remedy's the situation very quickly and without any hassle!

Additional comments:
I had a problem with the first guitar that was sent to me but after a few emails, you sent me a new one really quickly and provided a UPS call tag for the old one. Thanks for the awesome service!

How does this guitar compare with your old guitar, other guitars, or guitars you've tried in stores?
I have never owned a steel string acoustic before. I have played nylon string classical and Flamenco since I was 13 and have had many guitars in that genre. I currently have a hand-built Gracia, Segovia model, from Brazil, and recently bought an A6 Godin because of it's so called "playablity." I still had to do some setup on the Gracia. I have tried NUMEROUS guitars in stores over the years and was never truly satisfied with the setups or sound. I even delved into the world of the $3000+ guitars and was STILL not completely happy with the playability of them. RIGHT out of the box, the Zager immediately showed me its worth. (LOVE the onboard tuner.) I did some minor tuning, and hit it. WOW! It IS easy to play. I have had arthritis in the left index finger for many years, so my inability to chord well was a HUGE issue for me. Right away, without strain or pain I could chord again. awesome. Whatever Denny is doing in his setup absolutely kicks ass over any guitar I have played or owned. Playing has become a joy again. The sound quality is wonderful; very full, with a beautiful resonance, even with this smaller body guitar. I know as the guitar ages the sound and playablity will only improve. How often do you ever get to have a GREAT purchase get even better? I am selling ALL my other guitars.

What's your favorite part about this guitar?
This question isn't fair. LOL. Gee - A great price for a guitar with awesome playablity and terrific sound, customer service equal to none....dang, I'm stuck. OH YES. My favorite part of the guitar is Dennis Zager. Without him I wouldn't be writing this review, or playing this fabulous guitar. He took HIS dissatisfaction with a entire industry and put his time, energy, and personal touch to work. I know what it takes to setup up a guitar. Denny has gone SO FAR BEYOND the extra mile in offering guitars of this quality to the public, I can't thank him enough. He could have just setup his own guitars and been done with it. Instead, he has given ALL of us the chance to play with an ear to ear smile on our faces. Ok, Sainthood might not be in order, but, dang. Find me a Better guitar than this and I will eat it, then buy one. It ISN'T out there folks. I have looked for years, decades even, barring spending over $10,000. Stop looking and buy this.

If you didn't know the price of this guitar what would you estimate the price to be?
That's kind of a loaded question. But I will put it this way - PRICELESS. That fact that I CAN play again, WITH ease, and WITH joy, goes beyond value for me. It is a beautiful instrument, that played "like butter" right out of box. You get customer service like NO ONE ELSE has in this industry. There is NO price you can put on playing with joy for the rest of your life. I have never played a guitar in ANY price range that overall compares to the Zager and what their company offers.

How would you rate customer support?
The best I have experienced. And I have worked in the customer service industry most all of my life, so I know first hand what it takes. It doesn't get any better than this.

Would you recommend this guitar to others…if so why?
Without hestitation, unless you're looking for name brand axe with major snob appeal. See the above points, and re-read them again. If you think I am over embellishing this, TOO BAD. It is absolutely the truth. Usually you don't get a chance to rant for something wonderful. OK, you might need to spend $10000+ if you are a concert Classical guitarist, or a rock star gone insane. STOP wasting your time reading this and buy a Zager. You will not regret it.

Additional comments:
What else can I say? Thank you Denny Zager. Why couldn't I have discovered you 40 years ago? This kind of "happy" doesn't come along everyday with any product you buy sight unseen, let alone one you can see, test, and compare. A wonderful product with the best service. Too bad all purchases aren't like this.

How does this guitar compare with your old guitar, other guitars, or guitars you've tried in stores?
I still have my 1972 Guild all mahogany D25--and I get a similar kind of Travis folksy sound out of my Zagers. I have some shoulder issues from too many years on a big box and tried a Martin--it plays great and the sound is ahhh--okay acoustically. The Zager 50ceom plays as easy as the T5 but the sound is so much richer.

What's your favorite part about this guitar?
The size and the sound. The electronics are superb and the notch filter is a must if you are going to be playing in different sound systems. I also have a Fishman AURA blender and Zoom A2 pedal and neither improved the outstanding sound all that much. I am a very light touch player and this guitar is like it was custom made for me. Plugged in there is not a lot of volume adjustment between finger and pick.

If you didn't know the price of this guitar what would you estimate the price to be?
In the $1500-2000 price range given the looks and playability. I played a 9k McPherson last week and frankly this guitar plays better and sounds better to me--just my taste.

How would you rate customer support?
You can't beat it. Who else has so much confidence in their product and work they will give a lifetime guarantee and pay for return shipping? Denny has a lot of videos on how to set up, restring, etc. your guitar. I found that this guy knows what he is talking about when it comes to setting up the best playing guitar. I changed things I had been doing for 40 years.

Would you recommend this guitar to others…if so why?
I do recommend Zagers. When people come over to the studio, I let them play one and they are amazed at the sound and how well they play. I know two people who got Zagers for sure and others said they were looking in to it. I ask Denny for extra picks and he sends them so I can hand them out.

Additional comments:
If you play several hours a day or at a sitting, and you love the acoustic sound, I don't think you can touch these instruments. I have hybrids like the Parker Fly, and Ovation VXT--the Zagers play as good or better and sound so much more acoustically rich. The only people that might not like a Zager are heavy handed players.

How does this guitar compare with your old guitar, other guitars, or guitars you've tried in stores?
I am amazed at the ease in which it plays. The guitar is truly an "easy play" guitar. In addition, the sound is very strong but at the same time it is mellow and or soothing. The finish is outstanding and "pops" when you look at it. People not acquainted with guitars, sound or quality etc. see and hear the guitar for the first time and always make the statement "I bet that guitar was really expensive". I believe that is a great testimony to the quality an sound. The case is incredible as well. My Dad is going to buy one as well. We are telling all of our friends and band members at our Church. You can expect more orders. Thank you very much. Britney

What's your favorite part about this guitar?
I cannot single out one specific part or item. I love everything.

If you didn't know the price of this guitar what would you estimate the price to be?
$2,000 or more.

How would you rate customer support?
A+

Would you recommend this guitar to others…if so why?
I already have recommended to others because of the quality, the sound, the ease in which it plays, (no more squeaks or bleeding fingers) and the price.

How does this guitar compare with your old guitar, other guitars, or guitars you've tried in stores?
There is no comparison between this guitar and the one I was playing before. This guitar lives up to the billing, it is incredibly easy to play. I play in church with guys who own upper line Martin's. They have all played my guitar and love it. In fact, I often allow them to use it as a back up when I am not playing. They pick it up and feel just as comfortable as playing their own.

What's your favorite part about this guitar?
The easy playing of the guitar is second to none. I have played a lot of guitars with very nice action, but I am always amazed when I come back to my Zager. It just doesn't get any better.

If you didn't know the price of this guitar what would you estimate the price to be?
I would expect the guitar to be over $1000 if I got a great deal. $1200-$1500 would still seem reasonable to me.

How would you rate customer support?
I honestly have never had a company respond so quickly to solve my issues. Second to none!

Would you recommend this guitar to others…if so why?
I not only would recommend Zager guitars to others, but I have. My brother purchased his ZAD 50CE less than a year ago and is just as happy as I am. He had a great buying experience. I happily recommend Zager to anyone looking for a great guitar.

How does this guitar compare with your old guitar, other guitars, or guitars you've tried in stores?
No comparison. Other acoustic guitars I've played made my fingers get numb and fatigued. Because of my small hands I could never play a bass note with my thumb. With the Zager I don't get finger fatigue or the numbness as easily.

What's your favorite part about this guitar?
The ease at which I can change from chord to chord

If you didn't know the price of this guitar what would you estimate the price to be?

How does this guitar compare with your old guitar, other guitars, or guitars you've tried in stores?
I feel the Zager plays easier, the fit and finish is awsome. The dreadnot body produces a great sound, even with out using a amp, however I do use my amp at gigs. I don't know why, but it is easier to play.

What's your favorite part about this guitar?
The playability, fit and finish looks great, and price.

If you didn't know the price of this guitar what would you estimate the price to be?
Based on my looking around here at home, I would say $1200.00

How would you rate customer support?
Wonderful, courtious, and quick response. thank you

Would you recommend this guitar to others…if so why?
Yes. I already have. If I like a product, I am not bashful about spreading the word. I am 70 years old, and have been in retail all my working years. A happy customer is the best advertisement.

Additional comments:
I am enjoying playing more, and with a great guitar it makes it so much fun. I just lost my wife to a 4 year battle with lung cancer. Your guitar has made those caregiving days more bareable. Now we are playing 6 gigs per month for Mo. Veterans Home, Senior center, and a nursing home. It's lots of fun, and a worthy cause.

Model: ZAD-50CE OM

How does this guitar compare with your old guitar, other guitars, or guitars you've tried in stores?
This guitar is set up to play with much less effort. I was able to play chords on it on my first try whereas on my older guitar, I often muffled adjoining strings on these chords.

What's your favorite part about this guitar?
Its ease of playing, but it looks beautiful, too.

If you didn't know the price of this guitar what would you estimate the price to be?
$800 - $1,200

How would you rate customer support?
Excellent. Even prior to the purchase, Dennis Zager, Jr., was patient and kind enough to answer a whole host of questions that I had. Once I decided to buy the instrument, I asked that its shipping be delayed as I was going to be out of town. This was not a problem, and everything took place as arranged.

Would you recommend this guitar to others…if so why?
Absolutely. After struggling as a beginner to play certain chords and complete exercises associated with lessons, the ease of executing on the Zager guitar was immediately apparent.

Additional comments:
Upon receiving the guitar, I began to try certain chords that were problematic for me on my older guitar, and I was able to play them clearly on my first try. The guitar was almost completely in tune right out of the box; I had to adjust strings 4, 5, and 6 minimally. Strings 1, 2, and 3 were dead-on. I emailed Dennis Zager, Jr., to advise him that I recieved the guitar and how excited I was once I got my hands on this beautiful instrument. In that email, I told him that I would be sure to advise anyone whom I knew that was interested in buying a guitar to check out the Zager Guitars on the web.

How does this guitar compare with your old guitar, other guitars, or guitars you've tried in stores?
My first guitar was a Takamine Jasmine and the Zager is so much better and easier to play.

What's your favorite part about this guitar?
The ease of playing....the string pressure is so much nicer and takes so much less pressure to play which makes this an easier guitar to play for any amount of time, especially when learning to play and need to practice a lot. Sound quality is a big plus!

If you didn't know the price of this guitar what would you estimate the price to be?
At least over a $1,000 which it isn't.

How would you rate customer support?
Excellent, got my guitar only a few days after ordering and the on-line support is excellent. My questions were answered promptly.

Would you recommend this guitar to others…if so why?
Yes definitely....it is so easy to play and has such a beautiful sound quality. I have friends that play Martins and they are definitely impressed with the quality of the sound and the ease of playing it; it's hard to get them to give it back to me! I am so happy to have this wonderful guitar! I also love this size.

Additional comments:
I believe anyone buying a Zager would be extremely pleased to own one as I have been.

My old guitar is an classical so no comparison. I have played several, Martin, Seagull and Ovation... etc at The Guitar Center's acoustic room and the Zager is equal to them all in action, tone and and looks.

What's your favorite part about this guitar?
The ease of play, the looks and most of all the Price

If you didn't know the price of this guitar what would you estimate the price to be?
Around $1500.00 to $2000.00

How would you rate customer support?
EXCELLENT!...Dennis has been more than helpful with whatever needs and questions I have had.

Would you recommend this guitar to others…if so why?
I already have. I have another friend who's son is wanting to learn to play. Zager would be an excellent guitar to start and to keep. Why: Ease of Play and Tone.

Thank You so Much Denny and Dennis for your help. I do want to say their has been a lot of not so great things by some people about the Zager Guitar. If you want an excellent acoustic and don't want to spend 2 to 4 thousand this would be a great buy that you will keep, either for a beginner or a seasoned player. It is a pleasure to play. NOTE: Sorry Dennis it took so long for me to get this review done, I just wanted to check out some more expensive acoustic guitar's which I am not willing to afford. I have several guitar's and more is better as I like to do my own mixes and my different instruments, Guitar's, Yamaha Keyboard, and Fret-less and Fretted Bass's give me that pleasure. Thanks Dennis
