Denny used to modify guitars for customers 40 years ago which is where he gained much of his knowledge in good and bad guitar design but stopped when he began building his own guitars. He realized by designing his guitars from the ground up he could incorporate his own custom neck design, fretboard, bridge, nut, saddle, and bracing designs and because of this his own guitars played significantly easier and also sounded better than guitars he only modified. You can still find many of Denny’s modified guitars on the used market and they are very good guitars but they have nowhere near the playability and sound levels of his own custom guitars he builds from scratch.
