Dennis Jr. explains in detail where correct string height should be when your guitar is new and how you can adjust string height to your particular playing style.
Top 10 Most Asked Questions
We offer our cases separately as we have many veteran players buying our guitars who already own cases and we don't want to force them into buying another. We have 2 types of cases and offer them at wholesale cost on our cases page.
Here's a video that shows both cases up close:
Zager Guitars is a 47 year old family owned guitar company that does most of its business from friends referring friends and family. We are musicians and we understand you need to take time with an instrument to see if you’re comfortable with it. This cannot be done in a noisy music store with a salesman hovering over your shoulder trying to make a sale.
Buying online also saves you money because you’re buying directly from the builder bypassing the retail store and their middleman price mark up. This is why if you were to see Zager guitars in stores prices would be double.

As shipping fees can be excessive sending a large box fully insured around the world we are only able to offer our 100% guarantee to customers within the contiguous United States . We have very few returns though as our return rate is under 1%.
All guitars come ready to play with all the equipment you need including lifetime access to Denny's tuning & maintenance videos that he updates regularly with lifetime support from our video help library, a hand signed Certificate of Authenticity and a surprise gift personally from Denny. If you need more accessories we offer them on our accessories page.
Full Size Dreadnought: The most popular guitar size in the world. If you want bass, volume & power, the full size dreadnought is the only way to go.
Orchestra Model (OM size): Our Orchestra Models “OM size” guitars are the same as our full size guitars, but Denny designs them 15% smaller with a thinner body and a narrower hourglass shape so they’re easier for smaller players. Because they have a thinner body they will also have a slightly thinner sound but if you want a guitar that’s easy to get your arm around and pull in close our Orchestra models combine the perfect blend of comfort and playability.
4/5 Parlor Size: Our Parlor size guitars are approximately 25% smaller than our full size guitars but what really makes them special is they have a 2 inch shorter neck design. This means children and small adults (under 5 ft tall) don’t have to reach as far holding certain chords making playability even easier. Most of our customers buying our Parlor guitars are coming from little Martins and Taylors. They say the Easy Play Parlor has 30-50% easier playability and sound is slightly richer and deeper.
3/4 Travel Size: Hand built with the same love and care as our larger guitars, just pint sized. Great for travel, ideal for children struggling to get their arms around full size guitars, fantastic second guitar for the office. Because they have a smaller box design they will have a smaller sound (like any smaller guitar) but our electric model with built in auto tuner allows you to plug into an amplifier or PA system giving you the same power as our full size guitars.
Here's a helpful video we made showing all the sizes together:
The only way we can offer our handmade guitars at half of our competitors prices is by limiting custom work. We're the only guitar company in the world who offers a 100% money back guarantee that includes shipping both ways and our customers really like this as it takes all the stress out of buying. There are custom shops who will build guitars to spec but prices are extremely high (usually $5000+) and they never offer a money back guarantee as the guitar is custom built just for you. The models we have now have been refined over the last 47 years and have the highest ratings and the best reviews.
Does Zager make custom built guitars?
Yes here is a link to our left hand guitar inventory page: http://zagerguitar.com/left-handed-models/
My father only offers his guitars direct from our website meaning there is no middleman price mark up. In this way quality control is perfect since he's the last one to handle your guitar before it's delivered to you, and our prices are 50% less since you're buying direct from our workshop in Lincoln, Nebraska.
To remove all risk we're the only guitar company in the world with a true 100% money back guarantee that includes shipping fees both ways meaning you can try a guitar in your home instead of a crowded noisy music store, with your own equipment, and without risking a penny.
Where can I try a Zager?
We've been sending guitars around the world for over 47 years. If you provide your shipping address we'll get you an exact shipping quote. My father truly appreciates our customers around the world and as a way of offsetting higher shipping fees we provide our international clients a lifetime membership to Denny's Guitar Instruction Library free of charge saving you $200 and a years worth of free Zager strings saving you $89.
If you order Monday through Friday we have most guitars out the same day after Denny's final inspection, and average ship time is 3 business days. Saturday and Sunday orders are shipped Monday. If you need a guitar faster just contact us and we'll get you an exact quote. Average 2 day is $89, overnight $135. International shipping ranges from 5-7 days depending where you are located.
About Zager
If you look at our guitars closely you'll notice some key characteristics that you won't find on other guitars. One is a very comfortable natural neck design that's easy to get your hand around. You'll also notice lower string heights and much lower string pressures. This allows you to come over the strings at a more perpendicular for better accuracy and you can form chords with much less finger pressure which allow you to move faster on the fretboard.
Another thing you'll notice is custom string spacing which creates room for your fingers so when you’re forming chords you're not accidentally touching other strings creating buzzes and rattles. You'll also see a special fret design with softer material that takes away string "bite" and overall finger fatigue, as well as a custom nut and saddle design, and a custom bracing system which produces one of the best sounds in the acoustic world today.
It's because of Denny's lifetime of research that Zager guitars receive some of the highest ratings in the guitar world today. It might also have to do with that Denny still works on each guitar personally one at a time in our shop unlike larger companies who produce 500 guitars a day where the owners could never have one on one time with each instrument.
What makes a Zager Guitar easier to play?
Simple answer: We don't sell our guitars in stores. Many people don't realize that when you buy a guitar in a retail store almost half the money you're paying is going to the retail store...not your guitar. Retail stores need to pay for their bricks and mortar buildings, their salesmen, their advertising and all the expenditures that go into operating a retail location. This is why if you were to see Zager guitars in stores prices would be double. By buying direct from the builder you get twice the guitar for your money and your guitar goes from straight from Denny's hands to your hands which ensures perfect quality control.
How is Zager 1/2 the Price?

We accept all credit cards, debit cards, Paypal, cashiers checks and personal checks.
We'll hold any guitar at the sale price for as long as you like with a $100 down payment.

My father has the same warranty on his guitars as the other high end acoustic guitar makers. Our warranty covers everything except for damage from neglect. Our electronics are fully warranted for 2 years just like Taylor, Martin, Fender and Gibson $10,000 guitars. We even go the extra mile so in the event there was some neglect we'll help get your guitar working again. Almost all of our business these days comes from friends referring friends and family so we like to know our customers are happy.
Strings
My father sets up all of his guitars with our own Zager brand custom light 11-48 gauge but we have customers using all brands and gauges with excellent results. We do have many customers who were users of other brands move to the Zager brand after using them as they're specifically designed by Denny exclusively for his guitars. We offer them wholesale direct from our website on our accessories page.
My father doesn't build classical nylon strung guitars because their necks are so wide (usually over 2 inches) it makes them really hard to play. Many players use the thumb of their left hand to form chords and classical guitar necks are so wide it makes impossible to do this. This may be why 90% of guitars today are steel strung. Many large handed players think they need a larger neck and that's true to a point, but unfortunately their string spacing is still narrow so you're still bumping strings and missing chords like on smaller necked guitars.
Zager guitars have custom string spacing and lower string heights that prevents you from bumping into adjacent strings, but the neck is still easy for all hand sizes. Combined with lower strings pressures so you barely have to press to form chords and all the other little things that Denny builds into his guitars and playability increases exponentially. If you read through our reviews you will find many players who used to play classical nylon strung guitars who now only play Zager.
Cases
We offer our cases separately as we have many veteran players buying our guitars who already own cases and we don't want to force them into buying another. We have 2 types of cases and offer them at wholesale cost on our cases page.
Here's a video that shows both cases up close:
Guitars kept in a stand or hung on a wall are 10 times more likely to warp and crack. If a solid wood instrument is exposed daily to a blowing vent or hard sunlight it will warp and eventually crack and become unplayable. We have guitars 25 years old come into the shop that look and play like new because they were stored in a case. We also see guitars under a year old that are warped and forming cracks because they were stored outside of their case exposed to sun damage and dryness.
The molded is $250 case retail. It's extremely strong and extremely lightweight. If you're using it a lot for travel I would highly recommend the ABS molded case. If you just need a case for the occasional gig and around the house for humidity control and protection, the stitched wood case is excellent.
Here's the link to the ABS Molded case if you wanted to add it to your order:
Zager ABS Molded Hard Shell case
I made a video comparing the two cases up close so you can compare them:
Yes, we have been shipping guitars around the world for so many years we have it down to a science. We don't try to upsell our cases, but if you order the case with the guitar you get free shipping on the case as we don't charge for them to ship together. If you don't want the case that's no problem. We have many players who have extra cases or just don't need one, and this is why the case is sold separately. We'll ship your guitar with an extra smaller box and more bubble wrap around it for added shipping protection. Also don't forget there's full insurance on your package; should anything show up with damage you're fully covered.
Miscellaneous
All Zager guitars come with pickguards. We don't install them as we have some artists and veteran players who think sound quality is compromised putting anything on the soundboard and others who like the cleaner look without a guard but we always include them as well as a video in our video help library that shows how to install them. (It's very easy and takes only a minute.) If you'd like Denny to install it before it ships just send a note with your order or email us.

Does Zager make custom built guitars?
Yes here is a link to our left hand guitar inventory page: http://zagerguitar.com/left-handed-models/
My father doesn't build classical nylon strung guitars because their necks are so wide (usually over 2 inches) it makes them really hard to play. Many players like my father use the thumb of their left hand to form chords and that wide of neck makes it literally impossible to do this. I think this is why over 90% of guitars made today are steel strung like our own. Many large handed players think they need a large neck and that's true to a point, but unfortunately their string spacing is still narrow so you're still bumping strings and missing chords like on smaller necked guitars. My fathers guitars have custom string spacing so you're no longer bumping adjacent strings but the neck is still easy to get your hand around. Combined with lower string heights and lower strings pressures so you barely have to press to form chords and all the other little things my father builds into his guitars and playability increases exponentially. If you like follow this link to read reviews from customers who used to play nylon strung guitars who now play our custom steel strung guitars because they're easier on their fingers. http://guitarreview.net/reviews.php
My father used to offer 12's many years ago but phased out due to the amount of work involved and low demand but we have been having more customers ask for them lately so it might become a possibility in the future.
Denny used to modify guitars for customers 40 years ago which is where he gained much of his knowledge in good and bad guitar design but stopped when he began building his own guitars. He realized by designing his guitars from the ground up he could incorporate his own custom neck design, fretboard, bridge, nut, saddle, and bracing designs and because of this his own guitars played significantly easier and also sounded better than guitars he only modified. You can still find many of Denny's modified guitars on the used market and they are very good guitars but they have nowhere near the playability and sound levels of his own custom guitars he builds from scratch.
My father only offers his guitars direct from our website meaning there is no middleman price mark up. In this way quality control is perfect since he's the last one to handle your guitar before it's delivered to you, and our prices are 50% less since you're buying direct from our workshop in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Recommendations
The OM, Parlor, and Travel guitars are slightly smaller and because of this you're going to lose a bit in the sound department unplugged. If you play for yourself and like a guitar that's easy to get your right arm around and don't need a lot of volume to cover a room then you would be happy with the smaller guitar. Playability is identical on all our guitars as the neck size is the same. I have many customers who feel a full size dreadnought is just too bulky and uncomfortable to play for very long. Denny plays an OM because he likes to lounge on the couch and play all afternoon. The smaller Parlor and Travel guitars are fun and portable, although the OM will have the best (fullest) sound of the 3. If you read through the testimonials for the Travel and the Parlor, their sound is enormous for the size compared the a Baby Taylor, for example. The Parlor is a nice in-between model that is about the same size as the OM but bigger than the tiny travel model. If you want the smallest acoustic possible, go with the Travel.
You can see all of our guitars side by side with measurements on this page: http://zagerguitar.com/sizes/
Also check out this brand new video we did on the topic "Which size is right for me?" because it includes sound demos and you can see the comparison in sizes while Denny plays:
When the guitar is really big they end up spending more time wrestling them than playing them and you don't want the learning process to be frustrating for them. I would recommend the Parlor as it will have a bigger sound but yet be small enough for them to get their arms around. Here's a link to see it: http://www.zagerguitar.com/guitars/parlorsizemahogany
You can see all of our sizes with measurements on this page: http://zagerguitar.com/sizes/
If the child already has a guitar, say if they are a little older, go by what they play now and if they are ready to upgrade in size. Bottom line you don't want to overwhelm any beginner, especially a younger player, because it hinders them from wanting to practice and get over the initial hump until they can play "real" songs and music and enjoy the playing. I'd say go off of what he has already played and held and what has and hasn't been comfortable for him so far. That should help decide if he wants a smaller guitar or full size.
My father's guitars are designed for large handed and bigger fingered players. Many large handed or bigger fingered players think that a large neck is what they need for their big fingers and that's true to a point but what really makes a difference is a wider string stance…more space between the strings side to side. This extra space between the strings creates room for your fingers so when you’re forming chords you're not accidentally bumping into other strings creating buzzes, mutes and rattles. Combine this with lower string heights, lower string pressures, and a multitude of other features that my father builds into his guitars and you can see why large handed players love his guitars. Follow this link to some of our reviews from customers...many of which are larger handed and or bigger fingered: http://guitarreview.net/reviews.php
I also have a video on large hands here:
My fathers guitars are made for players with small hands and short fingers. If you look at our guitars you will notice some key characteristics that you will not find on other guitars. One of those is a very slim front to back neck design. When I say slim I mean the distance from the back of the neck to the front of the fret board. What this means is people with smaller hands and or short fingers are all of sudden able to put their hand around the neck and form chords with ease. It allows you to come down on the strings from a more perpendicular angle so you're no longer having to reach over other strings muting them out causing buzzes and rattles. One other difference you will find with our guitars is the space between the strings side to side. This custom spacing creates room for your fingers so when you’re forming chords you are not accidentally touching strings that you don’t want to creating buzzes, mutes and rattles. Combine this with lower string heights, lower string pressures, and a multitude of other features that my father builds into his guitars and you can see why his guitars receive the ratings they do. It might also have to do with the fact that he works on each guitar personally unlike other guitar manufacturers that use assembly lines with people who don't have 60 years of experience.
I also have a video about this here:
If you've ever watched my father play you will see that all he does is finger style, in fact he invented his own finger style system over 40 years ago. Here's the links for more: Zager Pro Guitar Instruction and About Denny Zager
It's for this reason he designs all of his guitars exclusively for finger style play meaning there's a little more space between the strings for easier chording and the strings set a little higher over the sound hole which makes right hand finger movements easier as well. All of his models are designed this manner so as far as a recommendation it comes down to more size and whether you want an acoustic or acoustic electric. You can see all of our models here: zager.com
We have many bluegrass players who use our guitars...I think we have more bluegrass players then all others. If you go through our testimonials and reviews I think you will find some good feedback about how our guitars work with this style of music. The 2 guitars I would recommend are our ZAD50 or ZAD80. There is really no standard for bluegrass music according to the things I've read and heard, although I hear that spruce is pretty popular among bluegrass players. Rosewood, the wood used in Martin D-28's and our 80 series, is very resonant and has a deep bass response that many Bluegrassers also prefer. This tone is sometimes described as being "darker" than spruce. Both the 50 and the 80 have extreme playability levels as my father works on each guitar by hand using his String Science system. Both guitars also incorporate the use of solid woods which mature with age giving them a deeper more powerful sound that gets better year after year. The main difference between these guitars is the woods. The 50's have a Sitka spruce top with mahogany back and sides which gives them a slightly louder, brighter sound. http://www.zagerguitar.com/guitars/zad50cespecial
The 80 Series has Indian rosewood on the back and sides with a red cedar top which produces a more mellow, slightly richer and deeper sound. The 80's also have full inlay around all edges of the face, a rosette around the sound hole, inlay on the fret board, along with gold plated Grover tuners. http://www.zagerguitar.com/guitars/zad80ce
Playability wise both guitars will be the same so if that's your primary concern the 50's a bargain. If you read magazine reviews and customer testimonials you will will see a lot of players who used to own higher level Taylor and Martins going with the 80 Series because it matches those guitars esthetically but playability is anywhere from 20-50% easier and price is about half since you're buying direct bypassing the retail store. We also have many customers choosing the 50 Series because it offers that same great playability for a lower price. If I have a customer who can’t decide this is what I tell them. If you want the look, feel and sound of a $1500+ guitar, but with better playability go with the 50 Series....it's a lot of guitar for the money. If you want a guitar that outperforms many guitars in the $2500+ range and plan on keeping it forever passing it down to your children go with the 80 Series.
Regardless of your decision remember that we're the only guitar company in the world who offers a 100% money back guarantee that pays shipping fees both ways if you choose to return it meaning you can try one in your home without risking a penny.
Sizes

Our OM (Orchestra Models) size guitars are 15% smaller than a full size guitar, so the waist is a little bit smaller and the width front to back is a little slimmer too. You'll still get a great tone from this guitar though, as it's not really small like a travel guitar. It's very comfortable to play and my father actually prefers the OMs because they're easier to get your arm around. If you find a full dreadnought too bulky and big, go with the OM as it's just a bit smaller and more comfortable to play. I hear this from OM owners all the time. The majority of our customers these days are coming from Martins and Taylors, generally $1500-3500 guitars. The feedback we receive is very positive. They say we match or better in sound and finish quality but our playability is 30-50% easier and our prices are about half since you're buying direct from our shop and not the retail chain stores.
Here's a link to our Compare Sizes page where you can see the OMs against the other models:

This video features the Parlor Mahogany with sound demo and shows you the guitar's details.
Materials
My father uses rosewood over ebony on the fret boards on all of our guitars. Over the last 50 years he's seen more issues with frets springing on the ebony boards due to its denseness and to the dedicated ear ebony fret boards actually put off a slightly tinnier sound then rosewood which sounds richer and warmer.
-Coming Soon- You can also email Dennis Jr now at Dennis@zager.com
Our guitars only incorporate the highest quality parts and that's why we use Grover brand tuning machines.
Comparing Models
The acoustic electrics are nice in that they have built in automatic tuners that tune your guitar fast and precision every time. For beginning players this is vital as it trains your ear so you develop a proper sense of pitch. Our touring artists like them because they're accurate and fast. The electronics also give you the option of plugging into an amplifier or PA system and playing your guitar like a full blown electric so it's like having 2 guitars in one. Sound on our electrics unplugged is identical to our full acoustics so you give up nothing sound wise. Our venetian cutaway models sound within 3% of our full box models so any sound loss is negligible.

I have a brand new video comparing both guitars right here:
If I have a player coming from a $4000 Taylor 9 or Martin I'll usually recommend our 900 Series because if you're used to that kind of detail and quality you get on a $4000 guitar our 900 matches or betters except we usually outperform on playability. Our 80 Series has been one of our best selling guitars for close to 20 years now. I've had customers coming from Taylor 9, 8, 7...Martin D28, D35 who absolutely love the 80 Series. The 900's are more ornate...much more detail with the hand bent maple binding. Sound wise I give a 20% edge to the 900. Playability wise I give a 15% edge to the 900. Here's a video comparing the 80CE vs 900CE side by side:
